Thanks to so many kind folks who came out to the photo and music show last night at The Building.

Come Home
A sweet old tune that lends itself to a quiet show. You can find a version of it at copa.us.com on the downloads page in the Magnus Copa album info. It was written on the dujo, and whenever possible, performed that way.
Twisted Tree
A dark blues tune about the bible story of the knocking neighbor. May include hallucinogenic musical journey moments.
Fingers and Toes
Rock and roll means making songs about the devil. Maybe there’s a devil, maybe not. Anyhow, personal responsibility should not be trumped by this invisible figure. This is a song about someone who makes a deal to let the devil take the blame for bad behavior.
What Could Be Better Than Loving You
Drunken pirate sailing music scored for a voyage to the edge of a flat earth. Always a bit of a workout for the fingers. My best melody ever, even if I can’t sing it well. Sounds great on the CD. Cory Basil is working on an animation for it.
Feathers
12/4 time, 2 key changes, a few picturesque phrases, and one of my favorites to play. “Between the broken and the mended things lay the feathers of an angels wings…”
Carry Me Round the Next Bend
This is a new tune that is undergoing its 3rd trimester. My mind can hear so many things going on in this song that cannot be rendered tonight, but that I’ll try to hint at. It has an anthemic, dramatic melody, a key change, written in 6/8, has emotional swells, and can be sung by simply by talking. Perfect Gospel Cigar Rock. It is about the prodigal son feeling insecure about coming home. “Carry me round the next bend, but don’t every carry me again. If you see me fall of the wagon, mama let me be…”
You Never Talk To Me
You Never Talk To Me Anymore: my own ‘House of the Rising Sun’. Lends itself to drones and world percussion…love the way it sounds on the record, but its great to play with any arrangement. The words are difficult to remember because they are so many, but certainly worth listening to and understanding:
You Never Talk To Me (Lyrics)
You never talk to me anymore
The way you used to talk to me oh Lord
You never call my name anymore
The way you used to call my name oh Lord
I haven’t seen love laid out quite the way I saw it
When I was knocking with my fist against your door
The air up there vs. the clouds around here
Makes me think I’ve taken less that what I should have stood for
You never talk to me
For so long I just do what I please
Eat the fruit from the forbidden tree
Just hoping that you’ll talk to me
I’ve been green, greedy and foolish
I’ve been clean and returned to the sewage
I’ve been mean, it seems, to the sweetest things
And I don’t blame you if you don’t take me back
Who could blame you for doing that?
You never talk to me anymore
The way you used to talk to me oh Lord
You never call my name anymore
The way you used to call my name oh Lord
When I was young I was full of faith but let nonsense cloud my mind
Now I’m too afraid to reach for the light
To believe and not receive
Now I lay me down after all these years for you to do what you will
I keep no strings, no sacred things, and no joker up my sleeve!
You never talk to me
For so long I just do what I please
Eat the fruit from the forbidden tree
Just hoping that you’ll talk to me
I’ve seen weeds growing in the clover
And cut them down with the blades of a mower
And if they return I will burn them with gasoline and a match
But I don’t blame you if you don’t take me back
You’ve no reason for doing that
Lot, Samuel, Abraham, Jacob, and Paul
A burning bush, dancing bones, and a pillar of salt
Its tough to believe when you haven’t seen anything unbelievable
But in faith we see nothing but the wind
I know there was a time when you spoke to them
So won’t you let me come listen?
I Love You So
My sweetest song, so its good to end with. Its about seeing things from my father’s perspective after not understanding his perspective while growing up.

Life Like Fiction
Written for AnnaLiisa. Tons of lyrics that rhyme with ‘shun’ like in the Rolling Stones “Can’t get no satsifaction”. Just look here:
No one knows how good it is to be with you
More and more less real every day
when the good lord put his best foot forward he created you
and set you apart like night and day
lover take no arms
i wont flatter you with charm
trap sunbeams in a jar that stays empty
then turns dark
in a life like fiction more and more less real everyday
heaven help me
has this flower found its bee?
who is it we’re really seeking when were seeking love
who is it we’re really feeling
whose comfort and whose protection
what is fact when there’s so much fiction
whose opinion gives conviction
when we are in love
no one knows how good it is to kiss you
more and more less real in every way
from what ive known from love this is a miracle
and i finally see the old things pass away
it would take a blue moon
and a life like fiction for pigs to fly over my shoulder
for hell to freeze over
from where it used to be a spring
heaven help a fool to treat the queen!
who is it were really seeking
when we draw the stars above
who is it were really feeling
when you make me feel love
whose comfort and whose protection
who is it were really seeking
through this fact and all this fiction

The Year I Got Everything I Wanted (Beat Version)
Written as a response to Cameron Conant’s book of the same name. One of my biggest rock tunes on ‘The Gospel Cigar’

Feeling good about playing tomorrow…it’ll be a stripped down gospel cigar…hollowbody electric with percussive animal skins—could use standup bass…hmm…
